Banned Taiwan-Malaysia Docu to Stream for Free

After being banned by local censors, award-winning political documentary will stream for free in Malaysia territories but only for one week.

Produced by HummingBird Production in Taiwan, Absent Without Leave was originally scheduled to screen at the inaugural Malaysia International Film Festival next month but it was not approved by local censors due to its subject matter. To respond to the ban, the producers and directors Lau Kek Huat and Chen Jing-Lian will be making the film available online in all Malaysian territories during Feb 28 to Mar 3, 2017.

The documentary, which competed in the international selection of Busan Film Festival Wide Angle and won the Audience Choice Award in Singapore International Film Festival, recounts the director Lau’s hidden family history of a grandfather who was a soldier for the Malayan Communist Party (MCP).
