BeachTV Links Up with Indonesian Producer for MMA-themed Reality Format
Lifestyle channel BeachTV collaborates with Indonesia’s Nation Pictures to produce a new action-packed MMA reality series, Beach Brawl for the international market.
BeachTV and its subsidiary, BeachTV Indonesia, signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Indonesian production house Nation Pictures, on the sidelines of the Asia TV Forum today. The collaboration will see the parties working together to co-produce Beach Brawl, a brand new sports reality format based on one of the fastest growing sport in the world, MMA.
The format is an action-packed MMA sports reality format that brings aspiring fighters from different parts of the world to a beachfront bootcamp, where they are put through the most punishing regimen, to be trained into the most fearsome fighters. The fighters undergo various challenges and matches to test their skills and courage. The losers get eliminated in each episode, until one fighter emerges as Champion of Beach Brawl. The intellectual property is developed in Singapore and has already garnered the interest of broadcasters in several countries.
The 3-year deal, worth about USD 12 million will see six seasons filmed in the tropical paradise Bali. Leveraging off the latest in production and broadcast technology, the property will see cross platform exploitation, the creation of VR content, and the licensing of the franchise into non-media spinoffs like MMA gyms, training programs and merchandise.
The launch of BeachTV, a Singapore-based experiential lifestyle channel specializing in beach related content was announced last year at the Asia TV Forum in 2016. Timothy Lee, Managing Partner of BeachTV enthuses, “Since our soft launch last year, we have focused a lot of our efforts on the creation of original properties with global franchise potential. BEACH BRAWL puts a new spin to MMA, bringing the popular sport from the confines of stuffy gyms and fighting rings into a powerful and visually vibrant outdoor environment. By creating a reality program, we go beyond merely staging fights, to reveal the training and various exciting obstacles the fighters go through. We also delve deeper into each fighter’s background and psyche. Why did these fighters put themselves into such punishing regimens? What gives them the courage to face their opponents? There is a story behind each fighter that can be as entertaining as the fight itself.”
Nation Pictures, an Indonesia based production and distribution house will be responsible for the production of the series, as well as brand sponsorships and syndication partnerships in Indonesia. Delon Tio, CEO of Nation Pictures elaborates, “We are excited to embark on this venture with BeachTV. Nation Pictures believes in developing the best concepts and telling the most compelling stories. When I first heard the concept, you can say it hit me like a punch. The series not only appeals to a growing base of MMA fans, but has the potential to cross over to mainstream audiences as well. The franchise is universal and can be easily adapted to many countries. I look forward to producing this series in Indonesia, and potentially with partners in Thailand as well.”
Following the launch of the franchise in Bali, Beach Brawl will be produced in other countries in Southeast Asia, including Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines and Thailand. The winners of each local edition will be brought together for an adrenaline-pumping regional showdown. Auditions will start in the first quarter of 2018.
